What is Hypnosis
Hypnosis was around long before we started keeping history records. It is quite possible that prehistoric man had only this as a medical treatment. The first written account of using hypnosis was well before the 9th century BC.
It was not until 1841 that the term Hypnotism was used. A Scottish surgeon named James Braid coined the term. About this time James Esdaile using a similar technique in Calcutta started using the term Hypnosis to more adequately depict the technique. Using Hypnosis, he was able to do painless amputations, tumors and many other types of surgeries. In a short time, Esdaile had gained a wide reputation amongst the European and indigenous communities for painless surgery.
Esdaile's mesmeric anesthesia was extremely safe:
"I beg, to state, for the satisfaction of those who have not yet a practical knowledge of the subject, that I have seen no bad consequences whatever arise from persons being operated on when in the mesmeric trance. Cases have occurred in which no pain has been felt subsequent to the operation even; the wounds healing in a few days by the first intention; and in the rest, I have seen no indications of any injury being done to the constitution. On the contrary, it appears to me to have been saved, and that less constitutional disturbance has followed than under ordinary circumstances.
There has not been a death among the cases operated on."
So even back then significant pain control with Hypnosis was a fact. But long before that Hypnosis was used in India by Yogis and in Greek temples as sleep therapy.
On 28 July 1847, a decree from the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office (Roman Curia) declared that "Having removed all misconception, foretelling of the future, explicit or implicit invocation of the devil, the use of animal magnetism (Hypnosis) is indeed merely an act of making use of physical media that are otherwise licit and hence it is not morally forbidden, provided it does not tend toward an illicit end or toward anything depraved." The Roman Curia is the administrative apparatus of the Holy See and the central governing body through which the Roman Pontiff conducts the business of the entire Catholic Church. It acts in his name and with his authority for the good and for the service of the particular Churches and provides the necessary central organization for the correct functioning of the Church and the achievement of its goals.
Later on The Roman Catholic Church banned hypnotism until the mid-20th century when, in 1956, Pope Pius XII gave his approval of hypnosis. He stated that the use of hypnosis by health care professionals for diagnosis and treatment is permitted. In an address from the Vatican on hypnosis in childbirth, the Pope gave these guidelines: Hypnotism is a serious matter, and not something to dabble in. In its scientific use, the precautions dictated by both science and morality must be followed. Under the aspect of anesthesia, it is governed by the same principles as other forms of anesthesia.
The Annual Meeting of the BMA (British Medical Association), in 1892, unanimously endorsed the therapeutic use of hypnosis. Even though the BMA recognized the validity of hypnosis, Medical Schools and Universities largely ignored the subject.
"Sigum Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, studied hypnotism at the the Paris School and briefly visited the Nancy School. at first he was an enthusiastic proponent of hypnotherapy and he soon began to emphasize hypnotic regression and ab reaction (catharsis) as therapeutic methods. He wrote a favorable encyclopedia article on hypnotism. He translated one of Bernheim's works into German and published an influential series of case studies with his colleague Joseph Breuer (1895). This became the founding text of the subsequent tradition known as "hypo-analysis" or "regression hypnotherapy."
However, Freud gradually abandoned hypnotism in favor of psychoanalysis, emphasizing free association and interpretation of the unconscious. Struggling with the great expense of time that psychoanalysis required, Freud later suggested that it might be combined with hypnotic suggestion to hasten the outcome of treatment. However, only a handful of Freud's followers were sufficiently qualified in hypnosis to attempt the synthesis. Their work had a limited influence on the hypo-therapeutic approaches now known variously as "hypnotic regression", "hypnotic progression", and "hypnoanalysis"."
It wasn't until 1933 Clark Hull and Milton Erickson successfully pioneered a cutting edge approach to using Hypnosis. This allowed hypnotists to quickly and easily guide a client into the state of hypnosis. In 1957 Milton Erickson founded The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. In the early 1960's another pioneer, Dave Elman was bringing cutting edge ideas to the Hypnosis field. Before Erickson’s death in 1980, he had written 150 journals, worked with over 30,000 clients and authored or coauthored several books.
Dave Elman was looking for a way to place a person in a hypnotic state quickly. This was beneficial in that more time could be spent doing the therapy and less time getting the person in Hypnosis. Rapid induction is being used in conjunction with other methods by the entire top Hypnotists in the field today.
Gerald Kein worked with Dave Elman during this time as Dave taught doctors how to do Hypnosis. Dave Elman wrote the well-known book “Hypnotherapy". Mr. Kein is the founder, director and senior instructor of The Omni Hypnosis Training Center in DeLand Florida. He is the former Executive Director of the National Board of Hypnosis Education and Certification and is currently Executive Director of the Florida Society of Professional Hypnotherapists. In addition, he serves on the advisory board and certification board of the National Guild of Hypnotists. It was my privilege to be able to study under Gerald Kein to become a Board Certified Hypnotist.

Even in the educated world of today, the word Hypnosis still brings forth fear and apprehension to many people. They still think a Hypnotist can control them or make them tell their innermost personal secrets. Others believe that when they are in a hypnotic state, they are unconscious and not aware of what is happening around them. Generally, these misconceptions are based on Hollywood films, TV shows etc. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth! All five senses are heightened. You are more aware and in control than any other time in your life. The clinical side of hypnosis is used for alternative health care techniques or as an adjunct to traditional medical and psychological care.
When a person is in the Hypnotic state, physically they are deeply relaxed but mentally they are hundreds of times more alert then when in their normal state of awareness. Their ability to hear what is going on around them is greatly improved. They are aware of everything and are active participants in the Hypnotic process. It is impossible to force a suggestion on anybody that they don’t want to have or that they may feel uncomfortable with. Such a suggestion would be instantly rejected and would have no effect on them. Clients are always in control. No suggestion can enter the subconscious mind without them actively supporting and helping to get that suggestion in.
If the suggestion is wanted and beneficial, it is allowed to enter the subconscious mind. Now, the subconscious mind is a giant computer and must respond to the information placed into it. All of us are what our subconscious minds perceive us to be. This deep part of us develops its perceptions of who we are based on our everyday experiences in life. If our subconscious mind perceives us to be fat, we become fat. If it perceives us to be a smoker, we smoke. And so on with many issues and challenges in other areas of our lives.
The suggestions received while in hypnosis, if accepted by the individual, will change the subconscious perception of the particular issue being addressed. For example, when an overweight person’s perception at the subconscious level is changed to one of being slim and trim that is now how they perceive themselves. If a smoker’s perception at the subconscious level is changed to one of being a nonsmoker, they become a non-smoker…instantly!!!
The secret to success with Hypnosis is simply this: the client must honestly want the change to occur. If the client is being pressured by family members, doctors or others and does not honestly want the change for themselves, the client will reject the suggestions and change will not happen. The Hypnotist is merely a guide for the client. If a client wants and accepts this guidance, they work together as a team to make the client’s goals a reality.
Hypnosis not only works well to stop smoking and to control weight, but is extremely effective in eliminating phobias, memory and concentration improvement, increasing motivation, stress reduction, sales improvement, nail biting, study improvement, test anxiety and sports improvement. The truth is hypnosis rapidly helps with just about any issues or challenges we may have in our daily lives and SO MUCH MORE. Hypnosis is “The Secret” that can help you get whatever you want out of life. Whatever it is that you want, Hypnosis will help you to realize your dreams.
Hypnosis can and will change your life. It is a wonderful and powerful gift. That gift is the knowledge of what you can do with hypnosis. This information is much more valuable than gold or diamonds. With this information you can live a full and happy life beyond your wildest imagination.
With hypnosis just about anything is possible. The ability for YOU to be able to go into your mind and change faulty programming makes this possible. The reason I say you is that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. I am just a guide helping you make the changes that you want. For example, the mind is so powerful that it can and does duplicate every disease known to man. Notice I didn’t say some or a few but ALL Diseases. Many doctors report that 90% or more of the people in hospitals are there because of stress…including many types of cancer and heart disease. We actually make ourselves sick by bad programming. Now for the good news, we can change all that with hypnosis.
You see our mind is a giant computer. The primary role of our computer is that it must make us into the type of person that it perceives us to be, based on all the programming that has been placed into it, and will continue to be placed into it until we die.
If the programming is changed, it must operate on the new programming. It will no longer operate on the old programming. That is why it is so easy to become a nonsmoker. If you change the programming from being a smoker to a nonsmoker it must operate on that programming making you a nonsmoker. A computer must act on the programming placed in it. It has no choice.
I want you to get your mind around this. If an idea, a thought or a concept is allowed to go into the Subconscious Mind, it must happen. You are changing programming and that inner mind must respond to the new programming. Did you catch that??? ANY idea, thought or concept you put in your Subconscious Mind Must Happen!!! If you tell it, you are a non-smoker than you are a non-smoker. If you tell it you are slim and trim then you are slim and trim. It will find a way to make this happen. WOW!!! Did you get that? Do you understand what I am telling you? Are you seeing the possibilities now???
Hypnosis will completely change your life. Hypnosis is the real “Secret”. What is it you want? Do you want wealth, health, or maybe happiness? Hypnosis can give you all that and more.
